How to Make Your Wardrobe More Sustainable
WRITTEN BY: Ken Arp - Effort's Eco-Essentials
I think by now we all realize the toll that the fashion industry is taking on our planet. It is one of the biggest polluters on earth. Fast fashion (cheap trendy clothing) has taken over and is filling our closets with an unbelievable number of unnecessary items. It’s time that we all have a look and find ways to make our closets more sustainable and eco-friendly. Here are a few steps you can take to maintaining a healthier wardrobe.
How to Make Your Wardrobe More Sustainable
1. Skip Trendy Fashions
When purchasing your clothing, think about how many times you really think you will wear it and will it stay in fashion for a long period of time. I rushed out to get a few neon tops when they first became fashionable. Unfortunately, they sit in a ball in the back of my closet, and I doubt they will ever be worn again.
2. Buy Quality Over Quantity
Look for products that are well made. Yes, they may cost you more up front but in the long run they will save you money because those cheap, fast fashion items fall apart and loose their shape quickly. High quality materials will last a lifetime so choose clothing that you absolutely love and can see keeping forever. I find that basics that are timeless and classic are easy to mix and match to create many outfits.
3. Make Alterations and Repairs
I have an array of sizes in my closet. Thankfully, I have lost and kept off the final 10 pounds for a year, so I am ready to say goodbye to my larger sizes. There are some pieces that I still would love to wear so I am taking them to the tailor to be altered. How many items have you thrown out because there was a hole, or it was missing a button? Learn how to do easy repairs or take along to the tailor for more detailed projects.
4. Re-Purpose
We all have those white t-shirts that over time become yellow or gray. I cut these up into rags and use them to dust and clean around the house. I do have a friend who is a little more creative and will cut up old sweatshirts and make them into purses. Unfortunately, I am not there yet but maybe one day. Find your own way to get creative!
5. Donate
If there are items in your closet that you know you will never wear again, donate instead of tossing in the trash. There are always shelters and charities looking for clothing donations.
6. Shop Eco-Friendly Brands
The non-biodegradable synthetic fabrics that we wear are polluting our oceans. Tiny plastic micro-fibers are released into the water and soil every time you wash your clothes. These micro-fibers have been found in rivers, oceans and soil impacting our eco-systems and causing harm to marine life and animals. Clothing made from natural eco-friendly fibers such as hemp, bamboo and organic cotton will decompose. These crops require little water and little to no pesticides to grow.
